Belle Heth Elementary Students Discover Nano in Everyday Life at Hokie for a Day
The National Center for Earth and Environmental Research (NanoEarth) participated in the Fall 2024 Hokie for a Day. Led by Virginia Tech’s (VT) Center for Educational Networks and Impacts (CENI), the event hosts multiple Title 1 elementary schools over the Fall and Spring semesters. Students have the opportunity to learn about college, including social life, admission, organizations, and programs of study.
NanoEarth hosted a booth to introduce 58 fifth grade students and 6 adults from Belle Heth Elementary School about nanoscience in everyday life. Bipin Lade, Ph.D., NanoEarth's Research Associate and Charis Horn, Ph.D., NanoEarth’s Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) Instrument Specialist led participants through interactive NanoDays Kits, to gain hands-on nanotechnology experience. Lade demonstrated hydrophobic nano sand and Horn explained the magnetic properties of ferrofluid to students. At the end of the rotations, students had the opportunity to learn about nano coated fibers to make hydrophobic fabric.
